The ACS1 3.5i: A BMW 1 Series, AC Schnitzer-style |
|
| |
|
 |
If the stock 135i doesn't get your heart racing enough already, AC Schnitzer may have just what you need in the form of the ACS1 3.5i, tuned to produce 360 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. AC Schnitzer says the ACS1 3.5i will go from 0-62 mph in less than five seconds and top out at 186 mph, up from the 135i's governed 155 mph limit. Perhaps more impressive then the 0-60 mph improvement is the ACS1 3.5i's sports suspension, which was reportedly tuned on the Nurburgring North Loop by Manfred Wollgarten, the Technical Director at AC Schnitzer. A front spoiler, side skirts, a rear roof spoiler, and a rear wing are among the aero add-ons, and an upgraded exhaust has also been fitted. The car runs on 19-inch "BiColor" wheels fitted with 225/35R19 tires. For those not impressed with the BiColor wheels, rest assured, AC Schnitzer has a full range of alloy wheels for perusing.
Interior upgrades over the base 1 Series include aluminum and carbon fiber accents and a three-spoke AC Schnitzer steering wheel.
Are all the adjustments worth what will surely be a hefty premium over the bare bones 135i? We're not sure, but we have a feeling AC Schnitzer won't have any trouble finding willing 1 Series owners looking for something more.

Detroit City Council kills plan to expand NAIAS home |
|
| |
|

Each year, thousands of journalists arrive in Detroit to see the best and brightest concepts and production vehicles automakers have to offer. It's estimated that the Detroit Auto Show brings in $500 to $600 million dollars annually to the region, which is struggling more than most due to the global recession. For years, the City of Detroit has failed to expand Cobo, and each year there are threats that the NAIAS will be taken away from the Motor City. The state of Michigan has been working with executives from Wayne and Oakland counties and the city of Detroit to upgrade Cobo, but yesterday the Detroit City Council voted down the proposed plan by a five-three tally. The proposed expansion was to add a much needed 166,000-sq. ft. of floorspace at a cost of $288 million.
The part of the plan that isn't sitting well with Detroit officials is a stipulation that hands control of the aging facility to a regional authority controlled by the tri-county area and representatives from the city and state. The city would receive $20 million dollars in funds to cede power of Cobo, but the council feels they aren't getting fair value for the venue. The city, which has been knee-deep in debt for years, operates Cobo at an annual loss of between $13 and $15 million. Due to disrepair, analysts say the building is worth a negative $284 million dollars.
We love the Detroit show, but the fact is that Cobo is a bit of a dump. The escalators don't always work, the cars are crammed into the limited floor space, and last year a fork lift collapsed into the Cobo floor. Automakers have been making their concerns known, with several pulling out of Detroit this year and a few more revealing no new products. NAIAS organizers say that Cobo must be repaired in 2010 or the city could lose its International designation. Exactly what the struggling city and region don't need right now.

check engine lights were harmed in the making of this ad. likewise no
check engine light is currently on in the aforementioned vehicle.
audi/vw north america does not condone driving your car like a sissy
and likewise is happy to see their cars put to heavy use...even though
they do not condone or support any of the above message. many audi's
and vw's were however harmed in the making of the "curshmobile" and
rightly so. in closing this fantastic vehicle has been from coast to
coast rocking the most and deserves a good home. [Source: craiglist.org]

Reinventing the wheel: Momo develops a steering wheel just for drifting |
|
| |
|
Momo, that Italian house of motoring delights, has created a set of
steering wheels and harness pads especially for drifting. The steering
wheels come in two versions: a 330-mm diameter, suede-covered wheel
with anthracite spokes and yellow trim for drifting, and a 350-mm
diameter, leather-covered wheel with orange spokes and trim for tuners.
Both wheels, at the request of the tire-smoking set, have 90-mm of dish
"for maximum oversteer control." And in case you ever forget why you
bought the wheel, it conveniently has the word "Drifting" embroidered
on it. The harness pads come in two versions to match the wheels. Andiamo!

BlueTuning: Bluetooth removes the clutter for engine tuners |
|
| |
|
 Our
minds are cluttered enough, so we try to keep the inside of our cars
debris free. Unfortunately, that hasn't been possible during the tuning
process of our new project car. Between the handheld control module,
our cheap, serial-equipped laptop, the yet-to-be-mounted standalone ECU
and the wire connected to our wide-band 02 sensor, the interior of our
project is beginning to look like the rats nest behind our desk. Innovate
Motorsports seems to have the answer, with a new line of Bluetooth
adapters, co-developed by BradaTech, that allows the entire Innovate
line of wares to be connected wirelessly. The suite of products
can transfer information to laptops or Pocket PCs and have a range of
up to 100 feet, expanding the possibilities of what we can do both
inside and outside our ride. Now if we can just get that damn idle
issue fixed, our world would be complete. Well, that and when our
coilover setup arrives... [Posted: Autoblog.com] [Source: Innovate Motorsports via Jalopnik]

ROUSH begins selling high-performance parts for GM vehicles |
|
| |
|
  We
heard rumblings from the underground that ROUSH was considering
expanding its line of high-performance parts to vehicles not wearing
the Blue Oval badge, and today the company that Jack built made it
official. After 12 years of offering parts only for Fords, ROUSH
Performance will begin offering parts for GM vehicles for the first
time. The first two products include the ROUSH Power Programmers for GM
trucks (shown right) and Cold Air Intake Kits. Soon exhaust systems,
suspension components and other parts will be offered, as well. Even
the ROUSHcharger supercharger system will be made available for the
2007-2008 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups. Though the
ROUSH name has been synonomous with Ford vehicles, particularly the
Mustang and F-150, the move to expand its product lineup to other
manufacturers only makes sense. ROUSH has been doing engineering work
for General Motors and even DaimlerChrysler for some time, so we
wouldn't be surprised to find out Chrysler Group vehicles will be
invited into the fold soon, too. And do we even dare speculate about
the possibility of ROUSH one day offering its own version of the
Camaro? Check out the official press release from ROUSH after the jump. [Posted: Autoblog.com] [Source: ROUSH]Continue reading: ROUSH begins selling high-performance parts for GM vehicles

SEMA: Turbonetics TurboTach gauge and data recorder |
|
| |
|

Using
an old-school, analog gauge to display your turbo speed, the
Turbonetics guys have come up with a slick new piece of hardware that
should have a pretty wide appeal. The TurboTach shows actual turbo
speed on the dial, but also records data while you drive so you can
diagnose and tune as needed. By comparing the data to the appropriate
compressor map, you can spot trouble areas, identify surging and choke,
sweet spots and shift points, or just if it's time to replace the
turbine. The device will take the guesswork out of the tuning process.
A dash mounted or dyno unit kit will be available from Turbonetics
soon, including the gauge, the speed pick-up and the mounting kit. More
pics HERE.

Siemens VDO wants to monitor your air pressure |
|
| |
|
 Something
like SEMA without the Vegas lights and parties, last months's
(Sept. 2006) Automechanika trade show in Frankfurt was a chance for parts and
service suppliers to strut their stuff before a world audience. More
than 165,000 visitors from 130 nations flocked to Frankfurt last week
to see what's new in the automotive parts business. One of the
highlights was a tire pressure monitor system (TPMS) from Siemens VDO
that promises to make it relatively affordable to add this safety
feature to just about any vehicle. Some new cars and light trucks have
had these items available from the factory, but generally only on
high-end cars or as part of an expensive options package. The
Siemens VDO TPMS places unique valve stems and sensors into each wheel
that can detect changes in tire pressure and warn the driver by a
radio signal sent to a control unit inside the car. Low tire pressure
is a common problem on passenger vehicles that results in higher fuel
consumption and tire wear. If there is not enough air in the tires,
they will spread and the rubber can become hotter. This heat can lead
to the tire splitting away. Besides being one of the most common causes
of breakdowns, low tire pressure leads to higher rolling resistance and
therefore higher fuel consumption as well. No word on pricing as of yet. [Posted: Autoblog.com] [Source: Siemens VDO via gizmag]
